Topological complexity of closed manifolds with nonzero simplicial volume

In this talk, we introduce a central theorem in systolic geometry from Gromov. Basic notion in systolic geometry is called systole, which is defined to be the shortest length of a non-contractible loop. Gromov’s systolic inequality states that systole of closed essential Riemannian manifolds has upper bound in terms of volume. The optimal constant in systolic inequality is called systolic volume, which is a homotopy invariant of manifolds. Gromov proved that systolic volume is related to simplicial volume. In the talk, we make a brief investigation to Gromov’s theorem. Then we show new progresses on some related problems.
