Recent progress on hydrodynamic stability and boundary layer theory

报告摘要:The hydrodynamics stability theory is mainly concerned with the transition of fluid motion from laminar to turbulent flow. More than a hundred years ago, Orr and Sommerfeld conceived an approach to account for the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Although Orr-Sommerfeld approach cannot yield a critical Reynolds number for the stability of plane flows, Tollmien and Schlichting applied this approach to the laminar boundary layer flow, and succeeded to display the stable and unstable states of flow as a function of the Reynolds number and the wavelength of the disturbance. In this talk, I will describe the Orr-Sommerfeld approach and introduce some recent mathematical progress on understanding the transition mechanism and Tollmien-Schlichting waves.

专家简介:章志飞,北京大学数学科学学院博雅特聘教授,主要从事偏微分方程的理论研究,在流体力学方程的适定性、自由界面问题、液晶的数学理论、边界层以及流动稳定性的数学理论等方面取得了一系列重要的研究成果,已在Invent Math, CPAM, Annales ENS, Memoirs AMS等顶尖数学刊物上发表学术论文110余篇,2014年获国家杰出青年科学基金,多次入选国家高层次人才计划,2022年国际数学家大会作45分钟报告。
