How Mathematics Contributes to Research in Computational Linguistics: A Review plus Current Studies on Information Theory’s Application in Communication Studies

报告摘要:Computational Linguistics is an interdisciplinary research domain which integrates computer science and linguistics. It could be considered as a subject which uses different computational methods to explain the rules or different phenomena in human languages(both oral and written). In the engineering domain, it has a fancier name‘natural language processing(NLP)’, which has already influenced our daily life, e.g., speech recognition system in cars, machine translation. In this talk, I will give a brief review about how different mathematical concepts(e.g., Bayes rules) applied to the research in computational linguistics. Then I will place emphasis on my own research, which is about information theory and its potentials on interpreting verbal and non verbal communication, i.e., human human interaction. I argue that different mathematics concepts have and will continue to play a crucial role in research in computational linguistics, especially when it comes to the computational modelling of dialogue behaviour.
