Abstract:

What does it mean if coordinates do not commute? Noncommutative geometry (NCG) generalizes our familiar notion of a geometric space by expressing it in the language of algebras, Hilbert spaces, and linear operators. Besides being a beautiful mathematical theory, it brings a beautiful explanation of the standard model of particle physics. In this minicourse we will explore the mathematics of NCG, with this physical application as our motivation.
